De man die op een ochtend in mei 2021 zijn rugzak pakte, familie en vrienden gedag zei en Sliedrecht uitliep, voor een wandeling rond de wereld van 40.000 kilometer, ongeveer 25.000 mijl. Dat is precies de omtrek van de aarde: 40.075 kilometer.
I walk around the world
De missie van Tom, met zijn stichting I walk around the world, is om de eerste persoon ter wereld te zijn die alle zeven continenten doorkruist, inclusief Antarctica. Wat deze missie zo bijzonder maakt is dat hij zich daarbij inzet voor maatschappelijke initiatieven die tijdens deze reis op zijn pad komen.
De start van I walk around the world
Het begon allemaal in 2016, ergens op een regenachtige herfstdag. Zoals bij veel mensen draaide het leven van Tom tot dat moment om carrière maken en het betalen van de rekeningen. Op die dag bewuste dag bekeek hij een video op YouTube, die zijn leven compleet zou veranderen. In deze video deelden mensen van oudere leeftijd hun ervaringen en dat waarvan ze spijt hadden, omdat ze bepaalde ervaringen niet hadden gehad. Hij begon een lijst te maken van dingen die hij echt wilde doen. Het werd zo’n lange lijst dat hij er eerst aan dacht om het uit te stellen of zelfs te bewaren voor zijn pensioen, totdat hij besefte dat er misschien geen later is.
In het voorjaar van 2018 heeft Tom zijn baan opgezegd, zijn huis en zijn bezittingen verkocht en besloot hij om fulltime te gaan reizen. Met een gevoel van nieuwsgierigheid naar de wereld, de zingeving van het leven en zijn diepe verlangen naar vrijheid loopt Tom voor de ervaring en om geld in te zamelen voor goede doelen die op zijn pad komen. Inmiddels heeft hij Europa, het Midden-Oosten en een deel van Noord-Amerika doorkruist.

I walk around the world is een stichting waar het geld niet in de zakken van haar bestuur verdwijnt, maar een stichting waar donaties voor de volle 100% worden ingezet worden om het verschil te kunnen maken.
Zodra een project is afgerond, wordt er beeldmateriaal gedeeld van het resultaat: spelende kinderen, op fatsoenlijk schoeisel, met de mogelijkheid om gebruik te maken van een goed toilet en stromend water. Dat is waarom Tom doet wat hij doet!

I walk around the world is an initiative by Tom Boerman, the man who, one morning in May 2021, packed his backpack, said goodbye to his friends and family and left Sliedrecht for a walk around the world of 40,000 kilometers, approximately 25,000 miles. That is exactly the circumference of the earth: 40.075 kilometers.
I walk around the world
Tom’s mission, with his foundation “I walk around the world”, is to become the first person in the world to cross all seven continents, including Antarctica. What makes this mission so special is his dedication to supporting social initiatives, that come across his path during this journey.
The start of “I walk around the world”
It all started in 2016, on a rainy autumn day. Like many people, Tom’s life up to that point was all about building a career and paying the bills. On that particular day, he watched a video on YouTube, that would completely change his life. In this video, older people shared their experiences and regrets about missing certain experiences. He started to make a list of things he truly wanted to do. The list became so long that he initially thought about postponing it or even saving it for his retirement, until he realized, there might not be a later.
In the spring of 2018, Tom quit his job, sold his house and all his belongings and decided to travel full-time. Fuelled by a sense of curiosity about the world, the meaning of life and his profound desire for freedom, Tom walks for the experience and to raise money for charities that come his way. In the meantime he has crossed Europe, The Middle East, and parts of North America.

“I walk around the world” is a foundation where the money doesn’t end up into the pockets of its board, but a foundation where donations are used 100% to make a difference. As soon as a project has been completed, visual materials of the results are shared: Children playing, wearing proper footwear, with access to clean toilets and running water. That’s Tom’s motivation!
